The Most Terrible Poverty

Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta said, “Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.”

This is the kind of poverty creeping in the society that is fast becoming so connected electronically, yet fast becoming so disconnected in real human interaction. We hide in the comfort of virtual relationship because it gives us a wall from being hurt, only to find out later on the limited capacity of virtual reality because it cannot compensate real relationship. A person cannot exist being alone; he has to interact if he wants to keep his sanity. We live because we relate with one another and we ceased to exist if we stop. We don’t have to look that far, all we need to do is look at the untamed social media and the effects it has in us.

The increasing news of suicides, shootings and psychological disorders are but symptoms of a society that has failed to value relationship. The accumulation of material wealth has its limitation; it cannot buy happiness. What we need is to practice again going out, talking and relating with real people, in real time and in real environment. Yes, we can get hurt but we can have love too. We have to reach out to those who are alone and unwanted. This is the only way to heal all the uncried tears and unseen wounds.

Lord, wake us up to the value of having real relationship. Amen.
